CHINATOWN – Tenants of 83 and 85 Bowery finally have a date when they will be able to come back home. Since their building was shut down by the Department of Buildings for improper maintenance (a stairway inside was structurally unstable), they’ve been living in a hotel nearby.
About six months later, the tenants will finally be able to return to their homes. By August 31 their landlord Joseph Betesh needs to make all the necessary repairs.
“They’re going to have peace of mind for the first time in a long time,” said Seth Miller, an attorney for the tenants. “We’re not 100 percent there yet because my clients at 85 are desperate to return home, but they have a deadline. They have a promise.”
According to the agreement, the landlord has made several promises to the tenants, including $25,000 compensation each and concurrence to keep rents down for the next five years.
